Avatar

I caught Avatar yesterday in its 3D form. I should accept that I expected a lot more things hurled at me and the feeling that I am caught at war in the climax but I guess I based my expectations on the last 3D movie I had seen – Chotta Chetan.. Well, we still have time.. Theres Shrek 4 coming out this May.

What I saw, instead, was the power of imagination and creativity of a man. Lumious plants and flying dino-creatures. A world made beautiful by what we take for granted, Nature. Pandora has officially joined the club featuring Narnia and Middle Earth.

This movie had the simplest storyline. One that could be set right in the middle of Africa. It’s just not the shamans, the rituals and the beads that the long haired big eyed aliens wore; it’s also the struggle between the might of the invaders and the right of the indigenous people. I guess Cameron chose to go with Aliens because we have had our fill seeing movies made in Africa about Africa. Everyone expects a blockbuster not a guilt trip of knowing nothing about what’s happening in our world or not needing to know.

It also had what every war movie should have - a soul stirring speech. The template for all speeches has remained the same. Charismatic leader gives a speech, rises his fist in the air and the BGM goes on frenzy. The earliest I can remember was the Independence Day. That’s the earliest since I started watching and remembering English movies. The President of USA makes the speech that inspires his soldiers to fight the aliens. Well, we now have aliens listening to rousing speeches to thwart human attacks.. And life, thus, comes a full circle.

So the tribe fights back. Evil perpetrators are evicted. Good triumphs evil once more and the movie rakes in the moolah.
